What happens to your parent’s things

The hard part was never the furniture. It’s deciding what matters, while you’re grieving or settling a parent into care. So we don’t decide for you.

Kept

Anything that might matter comes back to you

Photographs, papers, jewellery, medals, cash tucked in a drawer or a coat pocket. If it looks like it carries meaning or value, we set it aside and show you before anything moves.

Sold

Genuine valuables can go to auction

Antiques, artwork and collectables can be consigned where they’re genuinely worth it. We’ll also be straight with you about what won’t sell — most household furniture doesn’t, and we’d rather say so up front than let you expect a cheque that never comes.

Donated

Good things go to people who need them

Usable furniture, clothing, kitchenware and books go to charity partners whenever they can take them.

Recycled

The rest is recycled, sorted by material

Whatever can’t be sold or donated goes to recycling centres that sort it by material: timber, metal and more. It doesn’t go straight to landfill.

“I was particularly impressed with Goodbye Junk’s policy of recycling as much as possible as I particularly did not want everything just going to land fill… the quote was very fair… As I had been able to rehome some items between the time of the initial quote and the clearance the bill was adjusted accordingly in my favour which impressed me.”

How a deceased estate clearance works, start to finish

  1. Step one of a deceased estate clearance: someone taking a call at an office desk

    Tell us what you’re facing

Call or send the form, whether you’re settling a parent’s estate or helping them move into care. We’ll talk it through properly — often 20 to 45 minutes — because no two homes are the same. What matters, what’s urgent, and what you’d rather not deal with yourself.

  2. Free on-site quote for a deceased estate clearance: two Goodbye Junk team members being shown through a garage by the homeowner

    We come and look

A job this size can’t be priced properly over the phone, so we come to you. Free, no obligation. We’ll tell you there and then roughly how long it will take. If you’d rather not have anyone in the house yet, we can start with a video call.

  3. FIXED PRICE

A fixed price in writing within 24 hours

Everything itemised, line by line — including any cleaning, gardening or handyman work, at cost, so you can see exactly what’s ours and what isn’t. The price is fixed, so there are no surprises on the day. Take your time with it.

  4. Two Goodbye Junk team members carrying a dining table out of a Sydney home during a deceased estate clearance

    We clear the home

A deposit books your dates. Then we sort as we go — what comes back to you, what goes to charity, what’s recycled by material. A kind and careful crew, in unmarked trucks and plain shirts if you’d prefer.

  5. A room left empty and clean after a deceased estate clearance, with timber floors and French doors onto the water

    You see it finished

We’ll keep you updated as we go — the team take photos at the end of each day. Any cleaning, gardening or pressure washing follows straight on from the clear-out, and the job isn’t finished until those are done too. When it’s all complete we’ll send you the final photographs, or walk you through the house on a video call if you couldn’t be there.

The people who’ll be in the house

We’ve been clearing Sydney homes since 2016. The same team does estate work every week — it isn’t a sideline we picked up.

Every person who walks into the home has been police-checked and reference-checked before they start with us. We’re fully insured, and we carry it on every job.

  • Police-checked and reference-checked crew
  • Fully insured, on every job
  • Owned trucks and our own staff — never a labour-hire stranger
  • Unmarked trucks and plain shirts available on request

One call for the clear-out, the clean-up and the garden

Most estates need more than a clear-out. We arrange the rest and manage it, so you’re not chasing four different trades while settling an estate.

  • End-of-lease and deep cleaning once the house is empty
  • Overgrown gardens, vegetation and green waste
  • Pressure washing — driveways, paths, patios
  • Handyman work before the property goes to market
  • Moving pieces you’re keeping into storage, aged care or your new home
  • Secure document destruction
  • Forensic and specialist cleaning

These are quoted at cost on the same written quote, with our management fee shown separately. You’ll always be able to see which is which.

What an estate clearance is likely to cost in Sydney

Deceased estate clearances generally run between $2,000 and $15,000. That’s a wide range, and any company that gives you a firm number before seeing the house is guessing.

What moves the price:

  • How much is in the house, not how many rooms it has
  • Access — stairs, a narrow drive, a unit on the fourth floor
  • Heavy or awkward items: pianos, safes, workshop machinery
  • Anything needing special handling or disposal
  • Whether the garage, subfloor, shed and garden are in scope

Why we come and look. We can’t give you a fixed number over the phone, so we come and look. The visit is free and there’s no obligation. Within 24 hours you’ll have a fixed, itemised price in writing, and you can sit with it as long as you need.

If anything goes to auction, the proceeds can come off your bill or be paid straight to you — your choice.

On timing: talk to us. We work with executors and their solicitors regularly and we understand that estate money doesn’t always move quickly.

Questions families ask about clearing an estate

Is it cheaper to do it myself?

Sometimes, if the house is small and you have time, a strong back and somewhere to take it all. Most people underestimate the job. A three-bedroom home is usually 10 to 20 trailer loads, plus the sorting, the lifting and the runs to recycling centres. If you’re doing it around work and grief, it can take months.

How long does it take?

Most homes are done within a week of starting, and many in a day or two. For tight deadlines, we can speed things up with more staff and trucks. We’ll tell you at the quote how long yours will take, and we don’t start until you’re ready.

We have a deadline. Can you work to it?

Tell us the date when you first call, whether it’s settlement, a village sign-off or handing back the keys. We plan the job around it, and the earlier we know, the easier it is.

Our parent is moving into aged care. Can you help with that too?

Yes, it’s a big part of what we do. We can move the pieces they’re keeping to their new room as part of the same job, set aside anything the family wants, and clear the rest by the date the village or facility gives you.

Can we sort some of it ourselves first?

Of course. Some families prefer to go through the smaller things themselves. We can come in at the end for the furniture, anything heavy and the rest you couldn’t deal with.

Is there anything you can’t take?

Nothing you need to worry about. Pianos, organs, boats, hospital beds, old paint, chemicals, asbestos and gas bottles: we take it all, or bring in the right people for it.

Do I need to be there?

No. Plenty of our clients are interstate or overseas. We can work from a key, send photos each day, and walk you through the finished house on a video call. We can also arrange access through your real-estate agent or anyone else you nominate.

What if we find something important after you’ve started?

We stop and ask. Anything that looks like a document, a photograph, jewellery or cash is set aside for you — that’s the standing instruction for every crew, on every estate job.

Can you work around the solicitor or the agent?

Yes. We’re often coordinating with an executor, a solicitor and a real-estate agent at once, and we’re used to working to a settlement date.

What if the family hasn’t agreed yet?

It happens. We can send the quote to everyone who needs to see it, photograph anything valuable before it moves, set aside anything that’s still being decided, or do part of the job now and the rest later.

What happens to everything you take?

Usable goods go to charity and genuine valuables can go to auction. What we collect doesn’t go straight to landfill. It’s donated, reused, or taken to recycling centres that sort it by material. On bigger jobs we separate metal, timber and rubble ourselves, which keeps your cost down.

Do the neighbours need to know?

Not from us. We can attend in unmarked trucks with the crew in plain shirts if you’d prefer to keep it private.
